Veja surprises and opens space for "the defense of the defendants"
Abril's magazine, published by Fábio Barbosa, highlights in its Letter to the Reader a section created to present arguments from the defendants in the Mensalão scandal.
247 – In its weekend edition, Veja magazine brings a surprise to its readers. It's the section "The Defendants' Defense," which this week presents the arguments of José Dirceu, identified by the Attorney General's office as the "head of the gang."
Considered by many critics to be one-sided, partisan, and ruthless towards its political adversaries, Veja decided to hear "the other side." According to the editor-in-chief, Eurípedes Alcântara, the section aims to "familiarize the reader with the language and concepts that will be used in the Supreme Court during the trial and to give voice to the defendants."
A month ago, the president of Editora Abril, Fábio Barbosa, had a secret meeting with José Dirceu. The topic of discussion was the decision not to summon Roberto Civita and journalist Policarpo Júnior to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Cachoeira case.
