(Reuters) - Twitter will remove accounts that have been inactive for many years, the company's CEO, Elon Musk, said on Monday (8). Musk added that users of the platform may see a drop in their follower count.

According to Twitter's policy, users must log in to their accounts at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to prolonged inactivity.

Earlier this month, Musk "threatened" to reassign the account of the United States' National Public Radio to another company after the station stopped posting content on its 52 official Twitter accounts in protest against a label from the social network that signals the involvement of government entities in its editorial content.

Last month, Twitter removed the blue checkmark, which was supposed to verify a user's identity, from thousands of people, including celebrities, politicians, and journalists.

Musk has made verification a part of Twitter's Blue subscription, a measure he says would solve the problem of "bot" accounts on the social network.
