China Radio International African American human rights activist Martin Luther King was assassinated 55 years ago in Memphis, Tennessee, shocking the world. Fifty-five years later, in the same city, Tire Nichols, a 29-year-old African American, was beaten to death by five police officers, sparking outrage across the United States.

Between Friday night (27) and Saturday (28), demonstrations were recorded in dozens of American cities. The White House was apprehensive. US President Joe Biden published a note asking all citizens to remain calm.

In addition, White House officials held an emergency phone meeting with 16 mayors, advising them to prepare for possible reinforcements to the security system.

Almost three years ago, on May 25, 2020, the death of George Floyd, a result of police violence in law enforcement, sparked protests by movements linked to "Black Lives Matter," which swept the country.

The US police system has since come under pressure for drastic reforms, while tragedies similar to Floyd's have continued to occur.

In essence, the repeated "special treatment" of African Americans by the United States police stems from racism deeply rooted in American democracy.

At the same time, the polarization of internal party disputes has made reforming the country's police system more difficult. Furthermore, gun ownership and violent law enforcement by police officers constitute, to some extent, a vicious cycle.

The US president recently acknowledged in a speech that Martin Luther King's dream of equality and justice had not yet materialized and renewed his call to fight for the "soul of America."

But where is the soul of America? Is it in Nichols's painful weeping?
