Telegram sends a message to users saying that Bill 2630 will "end freedom of expression."
The text claims that the Fake News Bill "is one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation ever considered in Brazil" in relation to "fundamental human rights."
247 - The Telegram instant messaging social network sent its users a statement on Tuesday (9) criticizing PL 2630 - the Fake News Bill - stating that the project "will end freedom of expression" in the country and gives "censorship powers without prior judicial supervision" to the government.
The text also claims that the bill "is one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation ever considered in Brazil" in relation to "fundamental human rights" and asks users to talk to federal deputies in order to vote against the proposal (there is a hyperlink to the contact address for Brazilian parliamentarians inserted in the message).
Congressman Orlando Silva, rapporteur for Bill 2630, criticized the Telegram message campaign. "I'm receiving reports that Telegram is spreading fake news against Bill 2630 to millions of users. This campaign of lies will not succeed. The internet is not a lawless land, and regulation is a necessity. Bill 2630 yes!", Silva wrote on social media.
Telegram is facing a legal battle in Brazil after failing, according to authorities, to comply with court orders regarding the identification of users in neo-Nazi groups on the platform.
In one of the Federal Police investigations, for example, it is pointed out that a teenager identified as responsible for an attack on schools in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, last year, was part of neo-Nazi chat groups via Telegram.
This is not the first time a network has taken a stand against Bill 2630. On the 1st of this month, Google included a link on its search homepage that read: "The fake news bill could increase confusion about what is true or false in Brazil."The platform was the target of criticism and He even had a multimillion-dollar fine imposed by the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon). if he didn't take the text down.
