247 - The Sputnik Brasil agency announced, this Wednesday (3), on the eve of the BRICS Summit, the launch of a new Portuguese-language radio station that will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on FM waves. The information was released during a panel in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of experts and journalists from popular media in Brazil and abroad. According to the agency, the new station will be on the air from August 1, 2025 and will directly serve the 13,5 million inhabitants of the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area.

This new development makes Sputnik the only Russian media outlet to operate with uninterrupted programming in Portuguese in the largest country in South America. “It is symbolic that we are launching 24/7 radio broadcasting in Portuguese during the year of Brazil's BRICS presidency. We understand that Brazil, with its technological and economic capabilities, and its desire to pursue a sovereign and independent policy, is a point of reference not only for its neighbors in the region, but also for countries in the Global South in general,” stated Daria Yurieva, head of Sputnik Brazil and Sputnik World.

The announcement was made during the panel “BRICS as a Promise of Economic, Media, and Conceptual Sovereignty for the Global South,” which brought together leading figures in geopolitics and international critical thought. Among the participants were the Russian philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, the Brazilian economist Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr. — former vice-president of the New Development Bank —, the American journalist Glenn Greenwald, Professor Elias Jabbour (UERJ), and the geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar. The panelists highlighted the role of alternative media in building a new multipolar world order.

Sputnik is one of the largest international radio and news agencies, producing content in over 30 languages. In Brazil, its local structure combines a news portal, radio broadcasts, and projects across all major social media networks and messaging apps. With 40 million monthly views, Sputnik Brasil's Telegram channel ranks among the top five in the country, surpassing competitors such as BBC News Brasil, according to TGStat data.
