Singer: "PT members have left the left voiceless"

Commenting on Rodrigo Maia's election as Speaker of the House this week, social scientist André Singer assesses that the PT (Workers' Party) deputies "opted for underhanded maneuvers, depoliticizing a crucial dispute"; and states that he believes "the chances of reversing the impeachment in the Senate have faded, along with the institutional presence of the left."

247 - In his column this Saturday, the 16th, social scientist André Singer criticizes the PT's overwhelming vote for the DEM candidate, Rodrigo Maia, who ended up being elected president of the Chamber of Deputies in the early hours of Thursday. "Instead of striving to unite the anti-impeachment segments, the PT members left the left voiceless. They opted for underhanded maneuvers, depoliticizing a crucial dispute," he writes.

"It is evident that the entire public opinion applauds Cunha's downfall. But if the intention was to form a front to save us from a greater evil, the terms of its composition would have to be negotiated among the participants. As it was conducted, liberal agendas such as PEC 241 (the public spending cap), pension reform, and the release of pre-salt oil reserves, among others, seem consensual, which is far from the truth," says Singer.

According to him, "the new Speaker of the House, whose sociological profile is aligned with the current times, is now free to complete the liberalization. His election brings together the socio-political bloc that will govern the country in the coming years. The chances of reversing the impeachment in the Senate have faded, along with the institutional presence of the left."
