"Who knows, he might be the first black man to be elected president of the Republic," says Florestan about Silvio Almeida.

"There's no better name to represent the group he belongs to. He's a sensational man," the journalist stated on TV 247.

247 - Journalist Florestan Fernandes Jr., participating on TV 247 this Sunday (8), praised the ministerial body formed by President Lula (PT), especially the appointment of Silvio Almeida to the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship.

Florestan acknowledged concessions made by Lula in his cabinet to accommodate the results of political negotiations, but stressed that "fundamental areas" of the government were placed under the administration of "top-tier figures." "He [Lula] is on one front, and he tried to assemble a cabinet that represented that front. It's different from 2003, when his government had a cabinet very much in line with the PT's [Workers' Party] and the left. So much so that the number of positions in Lula's cabinet decreased for the PT. But in fundamental areas, he placed top-tier figures. He made a very firm choice in defending the recognition of these minorities. We have an indigenous ministry, which never existed before."

Next, Florestan heaped praise on Silvio Almeida and stated that the intellectual could one day become President of the Republic, being the first Black person elected to the position. "I have a special affection for Silvio Almeida. He is a first-rate intellectual, a very capable person. He has a characteristic which is the emotion in his speech. He captivates you. I participated in a debate about Darcy Ribeiro, a tribute to Darcy Ribeiro's 100th anniversary, and he [Silvio Almeida] was with me at the table. The way he speaks engages people, through his culture, his intellectual stature. And I was in Rio de Janeiro at an event, with about a thousand people in the audience, and when it ended, many people were crying and giving Silvio a standing ovation. I think he has a path ahead of him. Who knows, he might be the first Black person to be elected president of the Republic in Brazil, a country with a Black majority. There isn't a better name to represent the community, the group to which he belongs. He is a sensational man."
