Four companies are competing in the auction for 4G broadband.

Anatel is holding an auction this Tuesday for the 700 megahertz (MHz) frequency, which will be used to expand fourth-generation mobile broadband (4G) technology; the registered operators – TIM, Claro, Telefônica (Vivo) and Algar Telecom – are competing for four national lots of 10 MHz each and two regional lots; the minimum price for the granting of each national lot has been set at R$ 1,92 billion.

From Agência Brasil The Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) is holding an auction today for the 700 megahertz (MHz) frequency, which will be used to expand fourth-generation mobile broadband (4G) technology.

The operators registered in the auction - TIM, Claro, Telefônica (Vivo) and Algar Telecom - are competing for four national lots of 10 MHz each and two regional lots. The minimum price for the granting of each national lot was set at R$ 1,92 billion. The other lots will have minimum prices of R$ 1,89 billion, R$ 29,5 million and R$ 5,28 million.

The 700 MHz band will complement the 2,5 gigahertz (GHz) band, auctioned in June 2012, also for 4G technology. While the 2,5 GHz frequency has greater capacity and a smaller coverage radius, the 700 MHz band has greater reach and requires fewer antennas, in addition to being used by several countries, such as the United States and Argentina. According to Anatel, with the use of the 700 MHz band, it will be possible to bring fourth-generation mobile telephony and high-capacity broadband internet even to rural areas, at a lower operating cost, since this band is ideal for covering long distances.

Anatel expects to raise up to R$ 8,2 billion from the sale of the lots.

The opening of the envelopes will take place in a session open to the public, starting at 10:00 AM, at Anatel's headquarters.
