Mello Franco points out that "the Etchegoyen family has a long history of involvement in coups and conspiracies. The general's grandfather, who achieved the same rank, tried to prevent the inauguration of three presidents. One of his targets was Juscelino Kubitschek, the inventor of the city that Bolsonaro supporters tried to destroy."

In 2014, Sérgio Etchegoyen dedicated himself to attacking the National Truth Commission, which investigated crimes committed during the military dictatorship. He was acting to defend his father and uncle, who were accused of serious human rights violations. Both were granted amnesty.

Now, Etchegoyen is advocating for amnesty for Bolsonaro's terrorist supporters.
