The Brazilian tablet is born.

Positivo, by Hélio Rotenberg, launches the Ypy, which means "first" in Tupi-Guarani. It's the first tablet developed in Brazil and will be sold for under R$1; the product benefits from tax incentives and represents a victory for the Fair Price Movement, which is approaching 700 members.

247 - On the morning of Tuesday the 20th, Positivo Informática, the largest computer manufacturer in the country, launched the first tablet created and developed by Brazilians, for Brazilians. It's called Ypy, a word that, in Tupi-Guarani, means "first". The announcement was made by the company's president, Hélio Rotenberg. "We chose the name to express the Brazilian character of the product," he said.

According to Rotenberg, Positivo began studying the tablet market two years ago, due to the success of Apple's iPad. "But we knew we had to do something completely new and different," he says. One of the innovations is the offering of content and services within the Mundo Positivo ecosystem, whose online news is fed by Brasil 247.

One of the major advantages of the Ypy, which will arrive in stores in October, is its price. The seven-inch device will be sold for R$ 999,99, below the price of Samsung's Galaxy Tab, currently sold for around R$ 1.499. Another advantage is the agreement signed with Google, which brings 200 Android Market applications to the Ypy. In addition, the tablet will offer newspapers, music, and movies in Portuguese. "We also want to greatly foster the Brazilian app industry," says Rotenberg.

Fair price

Ypy is the first tablet produced in Brazil to benefit from incentives under the PPB, the basic production process, which is part of the tax incentive regime approved by the federal government for tablet production. These incentives were approved after... Fair Price ManifestoThe campaign, led by Brasil 247 and columnist Felipe Neto, has already gathered nearly 700 signatures from people clamoring for cheaper electronics in Brazil.

From a technical standpoint, the Ypy offers a high-resolution, 4:3 aspect ratio multi-touch capacitive screen, suitable for consuming regional content, especially books, magazines, and newspapers. The virtual keyboard is entirely in Portuguese, with ".br" and cedilla keys. The Ypy 7 weighs 420 grams and is 11,8 millimeters thick. The Ypy 10, which will follow, will operate on the Android 3.2 system, Honeycomb.

The device will also include pre-loaded content from artists such as Paula Fernandes and Ivete Sangalo, as well as games like Angry Birds.
