247 - Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said on Tuesday (11), in Brasília (DF), a "strong reaction" to attempts by big tech companies to disregard the laws and judicial decisions of the countries where they operate. The magistrate defended measures to curb the spread of fake news.

"Big tech companies have now gone all in, it's all or nothing," said the minister at the inaugural lecture of the MBA in Defense of Democracy and Digital Communication, promoted by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in the federal capital.

During his speech, Moraes did not mention Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of the social network X, which, in 2024, was suspended in Brazil for about 40 days for failing to comply with requirements such as the appointment of a legal representative in the country to discuss issues such as the regulation of social networks, with the aim of curbing hate speech and fake news.

According to the Supreme Court Justice, large companies globally are unwilling to comply with measures to regulate social media. The Justice further stated that "big tech companies have realized that the EU (European Union) has passed laws and that other countries will follow suit."

“We and other countries have managed to maintain our national sovereignty and jurisdiction because big tech companies need our communication antennas. It's for this reason that one social network has a partner who owns another company called Starlink, which intends to place low-orbit satellites around the world so it doesn't need the antennas of any country.”
