Far-right militia attacks Suzy, a transgender inmate featured on the Fantástico TV show.
MBL, Antagonista, and other far-right profiles on social media attribute a heinous crime against a child to the detainee, fueling a wave of hatred against transgender people.
247 - The name "Suzy" is among the most discussed topics on Twitter this Sunday, the 8th. She is a transgender woman, imprisoned in Guarulhos, a metropolitan region of São Paulo, who was the subject of a report on the Fantástico program a week ago, conducted by Dr. Dráuzio Varella. Days later, Fantástico reported that Suzy, who hasn't received visitors in eight years, began receiving letters after the report's impact.
The controversy was initially created by the MBL (Free Brazil Movement), which maintains that Suzy's birth name is Rafael Tadeu de Oliveira dos Santos and that he committed a heinous crime against a 9-year-old child - rape, strangulation, homicide, and concealment of a corpse.
The Antagonist also reported on the case, and state representative Janaina Paschoal demanded a statement from Globo. Other parliamentarians allied with the Bolsonaro government are asking Dráuzio Varella for explanations. Neither the broadcaster nor the doctor have yet commented on the case, confirming or denying that this is Suzy's conviction.
Left-wing activists criticize the wave of prejudiced comments against transgender people and prisoners, attributing the narrative to hate speech against these groups. “It’s clear that the problem isn’t any crime Suzy committed, but rather the fact that she is a transvestite. Brazil is a transphobic country and has no problem openly acknowledging that. Suzy could have 'stolen' a cookie; being a transvestite is what would be the problem,” wrote Ana Flor, who identifies as a transvestite and academic.
"It only took a supra-ideological current praising Drauzio Varella's humanism for them, of course, to go looking for something to discredit him. The crime against trans woman Suzy doesn't negate Drauzio's gesture. What a sad country that has to destroy its great people. Calm down: he's not a candidate," criticized journalist Vera Magalhães.
