Marina wins the Twitter Oscar.
Senator wins award for best tweeter of 2010 in politics.
Five Brazilians won the international Shorty Awards, which recognizes the best Twitter users of 2010. In the Politicians category, Senator Marina Silva took home the trophy. In the Journalists category, William Boone, anchor of Jornal Nacional on Rede Globo, and reporter Flávio Fachel, also from the same network, were chosen. In the Tech category, journalist and presenter Rosana Hermann was among the nominees. And Rene Silva Santos, the young man who became known for reporting on the confrontation between police and drug traffickers in Morro do Alemão, Rio de Janeiro, won in the Innovation category. The Shorty Awards selects the best Twitter users of the previous year, among actors, athletes, singers, politicians, and comedians.
The winners are chosen by the social network's own audience, who months before the awards ceremony can nominate a profile with the phrase "I nominate @username for the Shorty Award in the #category because...". The big challenge is to justify the choice in less than 140 characters, the limit allowed for posting on Twitter. Without it, the vote is not counted. This is the third edition of the award, presented at the Times Center in New York.
The best tweeter can be defined as the user who publishes the most interesting texts on the social network. However, the choice of what is interesting depends on the audience they are addressing. Therefore, it's only fair that the followers cast their votes.
Once again, Brazil is among the most influential and popular countries on Twitter worldwide. This achievement is explained by the fact that it is the second country with the most users on the network, representing about 8% of the total registered users, behind only the United States, with 50%.
