Another tablet in the mix?
Amazon has reportedly ordered the manufacture of at least 700 devices from the Taiwanese company Quanta.
247 – Amazon has requested the manufacture of at least 700 tablets for the second quarter of this year from the Taiwanese company Quanta. The news was published by the Digitimes website, but has not yet been officially confirmed by the giant created by Jeff Bezos. The tablet would come equipped with Google's Android system and touchscreen technology from E Ink Holdings, which has tools similar to those used by Apple and currently already works with the Kindle, Amazon's e-book reader.
Bezos' company already has its own app store for Android tablets. Recently, it launched a cloud-based service for storing audio, text, and video documents, and music can be synced with Android-equipped mobile devices. The only thing missing was its own tablet.
According to a report published in the Spanish newspaper El País, Amazon's tablet launch could lead to a price drop for the Kindle, which has been very successful in the US and Europe but struggles to establish itself in other markets. Because it is black and white and only functions as an e-reader, the Kindle cannot compete with current tablets.
