Journalist Eliakim Araújo, 75, died this Sunday, the 17th, at Fort Lauderdale Hospital in the United States. He was hospitalized to treat pancreatic cancer, diagnosed about a month ago. The journalist and presenter was married to fellow journalist Leila Cordeiro. The two lived in Florida. At the hospital, he underwent chemotherapy treatment, but did not survive the disease.

Born in Guaxupé (MG), the journalist entered television in 1983, at TV Globo, where he met his wife and eventually anchored the Jornal Nacional news program. His career began on June 1, 1961, at the age of 20 while studying law, when he was hired as a writer for Rádio Continental in Rio. It was in this capacity that he reported on the resignation of President Jânio Quadros in August 1961. Later in the early 60s, he moved to Rádio Jornal do Brasil, where he remained for about two decades.

At TV Globo, where he became nationally known, he participated in several journalistic coverages, such as the election of Tancredo Neves to the Presidency of the Republic. In 1989, he moved, along with his wife, to the defunct Rede Manchete, where he began presenting the station's main news program. In 1992, he even worked, still with his wife, presenting news programs on SBT. The couple also worked at Rede Record, still in São Paulo, where they presented Câmera Record News for three years.

Eliakim Araújo had lived with his family in Fort Lauderdale since 1997, where he and his wife also presented the Conexão América program. Before that, they had anchored the CBS Telenotícias channel, which broadcast in Portuguese.
