'Pardons have existed since the empire,' says public defender to Alexandre Garcia.

247 - Federal public defender Gustavo de Almeida Ribeiro used his Twitter account to rebut a post made by journalist and news anchor Alexandre Garcia, who stated that "the Christmas pardon is an intervention by the Executive branch in the Judiciary. Yet another one from the 1988 Constitution." "Verified Twitter account of a journalist with over 800.000 followers... The pardon has existed since the empire. It was even granted during the military regime. The effect of such misinformation is simple: loss of credibility," Ribeiro countered.

Garcia's post against the pardon was made on the 26th, following the controversy created by the back-and-forth regarding whether or not Michel Temer would sign the pardon. Garcia, who has already positioned himself favorably towards the ideas of president-elect Jair Bolsonaro, has been frequently expressing himself on social media in defense of the future government, which contradicts an internal decision of the broadcaster that prohibits political statements from its journalists on the internet.
