At the beginning of this decade, Ramonet traveled the world spreading ideas about how new information and communication technologies (ICTs) catapulted the rise of "octopus media" over "sun media." Any citizen with an internet-connected device now operates as a message disseminator or content producer, undermining the monopoly of the traditional press.
On the one hand, these technological advances represented the democratization of the means of information, but on the other hand, near the end of the decade, it became clear that these same advances led us directly to a second explosion of journalism: in essence, a devaluation or disqualification of content produced by professionals, coupled with a crisis of confidence that decimated TV and radio stations, print and digital newspapers, blogs, and the like.
