Google wants to buy Yahoo!

The world's largest internet giant is considering a deal with its biggest rival in the web search industry.

"Google has contacted at least two venture capital firms to help finance a deal to acquire Yahoo's core business," the newspaper said on its website, citing "a source close to the negotiation."

Google, however, has only held "superficial" meetings on the subject and may end up "abandoning the idea," the newspaper adds.

Yahoo! has yet to replace CEO Carol Bartz, who was abruptly dismissed in early September by the group's board of directors for failing to increase the company's business volume and advertising investments.

The company is currently the subject of a takeover bid by the Chinese internet group Alibaba, of which it is the main shareholder.

On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that at least nine private equity firms were considering acquiring Yahoo!
