247 - Although Globo denied, in a statement, having I pay bribes to CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) officials to obtain broadcasting rights for games. Regarding the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, as revealed by Argentine businessman Alejandro Burzaco, the Marinho family's media group sensed trouble soon after the FIFA scandal broke.

On November 3, 2015, the then-president of the organization, José Maria Marin, was extradited to the United States. Marin was arrested in Zurich on May 27 along with six other FIFA officials at a luxury hotel in the Swiss capital where they were to attend the organization's congress that elected Joseph Blatter for another term as president. The Brazilian official is accused of receiving millions of dollars in bribes in marketing contracts related to the sale of TV rights for the Copa América and the Copa do Brasil from 2013 to 2022.

Just two days after the extradition of the CBF official, on November 5, 2015, the president of Grupo Globo, Roberto Irineu Marinho, distributed a statement to directors informing them of the removal of Marcelo Campos Pinto from the leadership of Globo Esportes, the sports rights negotiation arm of Grupo Globo.

Campos Pinto was a key figure behind the scenes of Brazilian football over the last two decades. He called the shots in broadcast rights negotiations. In 2011, with the collapse of the Clube dos 13 (Club of 13), he managed to keep football on Globo by negotiating directly with the clubs. Television became the main source of revenue for the teams. Last year, according to a study by Itaú BBA, Globo and its pay-TV channels injected R$ 1,210 billion into the 23 largest football clubs in the country, which raised a total of R$ 3,113 billion.

According to Argentine whistleblower Alejandro Burzaco's testimony to the United States Justice Department, Campos Pinto allegedly met in 2012 with key figures in the scheme - Julio Humberto Grondona, José Maria Marin, Marco Polo Del Nero, and Alejandro Burzaco - to arrange the transfer of $600 to Marin and Del Nero.read more).
