247 - The Secretary of Communication of the Presidency, Fábio Wajngarten, signaled this Wednesday, the 20th, an intervention in Banco do Brasil so that the institution reviews the decision to suspend advertisements on a website condemned in court for spreading fake news, Jornal da Cidade Online.

"We are aware of the importance of independent journalism (referring to the website condemned in court). Not all communication of what is public depends on us, but we are already addressing the situation. We appreciate the response and you can count on the government to defend freedom of expression. Independent newspapers are very important and should be valued in the exercise of freedom of expression," Wajngarten said on Twitter. 

According to journalist Guilherme Amazo, from TimeThe online newspaper Jornal da Cidade was ordered by the court to pay R$ 150 in damages to Felipe Santa Cruz for publishing fake news with the aim of damaging the reputation of the president of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB).

The funding provided by Banco do Brasil to the fake news website was highlighted by the Brazilian version of Sleeping Giants, a movement created in the United States to undermine the economic support of websites and channels linked to the far right.
