Fábio Faria, Minister of Communications, is working to broker peace between Bolsonaro and Globo.
Brazil's Minister of Communications, Fábio Farias (PSD-RN), has been working to foster closer ties between the Marinho family, owners of the Globo network, and Jair Bolsonaro. Along these lines, he has reportedly already met privately with the vice-president of Grupo Globo, João Roberto Marinho.
247 - The Minister of Communications, Fábio Faias (PSD-RN), has been orchestrating a closer relationship between the Marinho family, owners of the Globo network, and Jair Bolsonaro. This information comes from a report by journalist [name missing]. Daniel CastroAccording to the website Notícias da TV, the minister, who is the son-in-law of the presenter and owner of SBT, Silvio Santos, met with the vice-president of Grupo Globo, João Roberto Marinho, about ten days ago to discuss matters related to the broadcasting sector and to try to reduce the belligerent atmosphere between the network and Bolsonaro.
In this vein, the appointment of Maximiliano Martinhão to the Broadcasting Secretariat, formalized last week, was seen as a concession to Globo. He is a career employee of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and was Secretary of Telecommunications in the Dilma Rousseff government, in addition to having his nomination endorsed by former minister Gilberto Kassab, also from the PSD party.
The expectation is that Martinhão – considered a technical expert – will facilitate the discussion of issues of interest to the sector, such as market equality with streaming services, as well as sensitive topics of interest to both Globo and other broadcasters. One of these points, vehemently defended by Globo, is the participation of up to 100% foreign capital in Brazilian television, currently limited to 30%.
The renewal of the broadcaster's license in 2022 is also on the radar of this attempt at rapprochement, since Bolsonaro has already threatened that the renewal may not be carried out.
