In a special edition, Veja tells all about Cachoeira.
At 13:30 PM, an extra edition of Veja magazine came out of the Abril publishing house's printing press; the content is bombshell; the magazine preempts the leak of 200 phone calls between Carlinhos Cachoeira and his editor-in-chief; information accumulated over a nearly ten-year relationship between the source and the professional is finally made public.
247 – As the fourth power, and anticipating a possible summons for one of its editors-in-chief to give formal testimony to the Federal Police about the pattern of relationship between the country's largest print magazine and one of its main sources of investigative information – the racketeer Carlinhos Cachoeira, arrested in Operation Monte Carlo – Veja magazine has just printed an extra edition, with a large number of copies, in which it is revealing everything the editorial staff really knows about Cachoeira's activities. He is at the epicenter of one of the biggest scandals involving influence peddling, illegal activities, use of the State for personal gain, with attempted schemes at Infraero and Anvisa, and the buying of parliamentarians. Senator Demóstenes Torres (DEM-GO) and federal deputy Stepan Nercessian are already on his list. Veja, with its last-minute publication, vigorously defends itself against suspicions that, if Demósteses was Cachoeira's political arm, the magazine was used as his editorial hand.
Overcome by an unprecedented moment of self-criticism, the top management of Abril publishing house, with president Roberto Civita at the helm, decided in the early hours of yesterday to circulate an extra edition, in which the magazine seeks to preempt the inevitable leak of the content of 200 telephone calls between its editor-in-chief (one of three) and the racketeer Carlinhos Cachoeira. The information contained in the regular edition, which hit newsstands on Saturday the 31st, was considered insufficient by Civita. Until now, through the pages of Veja, much was known about what Cachoeira wanted Veja to know – “We were the ones who got the big scoops on Policarpo, man” (...) “You have to distance yourself from him and make his stomach hurt, you know? There has to be a change, Jairo.” – but now, in the extra edition, Veja will reveal what it really knows about Carlinhos Cachoeira and what he would not like to be revealed. Cachoeira committed illegal acts with great ease, right under the noses of the magazine's best investigative professionals, who certainly considered him a very good friend. None of the in-depth investigations that the publication carried out throughout its recent history bothered Cachoeira, but in the special edition, his real story should finally be told by the country's largest print magazine.
To uphold the best traditions of the world press, we at 247 wish you all a fun April 1st, 2012 – the only day of the year we could deliver the above false good news.
