Economist says Bolsonaro is a threat to democracy.

247 - A report in the British magazine The Economist about the elections in Brazil points to the PSL presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, as a risk to democracy. "Even if he doesn't win, the fact that he has come this far shows that the center of politics is crumbling. Rejecting Mr. Bolsonaro would be the best way to strengthen him," the text states.

"Until recently, he was an obscure congressman whose main talent was causing offense. In 2011 he said he would rather have a dead son than a gay one. In 2014, he said of a congresswoman that he wouldn't rape her because she was 'too ugly.' Last year, a court fined him for insulting people living in quilombos, settlements founded by escaped slaves," the magazine describes.

The publication emphasizes that "Bolsonaro would make a disastrous president." "His rhetoric shows he lacks sufficient respect for the many Brazilians, including gays and blacks, to govern fairly. There is little evidence that he understands Brazil's economic problems well enough to solve them. His obsequiousness to the dictatorship makes him a threat to democracy in a country where faith in it has been shaken by the exposure of bribery and the misery of the economic crisis."
