EBC denounces racist attacks against Luciana Barreto and announces legal action.
A journalist from TV Brasil was the target of online attacks after commenting on a statement by the president of CONMEBOL regarding the Copa Libertadores.
247 - The Brazilian Communications Company (EBC) publicly condemned the racist attacks directed at journalist Luciana Barreto, presenter of the news program. Brazil Afternoon Reporter, from TV Brasil. The company informed, through a statement released this Wednesday (19), that it will adopt the necessary legal measures to hold the aggressors accountable.
The attacks occurred on social media after Luciana Barreto commented on the statement by the president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) regarding Brazil's participation in the Copa Libertadores. During the news broadcast, the journalist emphasized the need for clubs and sports confederations to adopt concrete measures against racism in football.
"It shows that everyone needs to improve a lot in order to actually implement anti-racist measures that go beyond rhetoric. The suggestion, in fact, is to study the topic. Perhaps some anti-racist training would help. Improve yourselves," the journalist declared during the broadcast.
EBC reinforced its firm stance against any type of prejudice and reiterated its commitment to racial equality. "The company's management reinforces its commitment to the agenda of racial equality, present in all of the company's media outlets, as well as the denunciation of any type of prejudice and discrimination," says the statement released.
Luciana Barreto has a consolidated career in journalism and activism against racism. In addition to being a presenter, she holds a master's degree in ethnic-racial relations, is a writer and researcher, and has received numerous awards throughout her career. In 2024, she was recognized with the Most Admired Black Journalists Award in the Southeast Region of Brazil. Among other notable awards, she won the Abdias Nascimento National Journalism Award in 2012 for her program... Reporting Paths – Blacks in Brazil: brightness and invisibility.
Her work against racism also earned her the "Yes to Racial Equality" Award in 2018, in the "On the Agenda" category, and recognition as Tourism Ambassador of Rio de Janeiro for her work in defending diversity. In 2015, she was elected one of the Inspiring Women by Think Olga.
