Can you go against Globo?
Globo attempts to reinforce a political message from Pope Francis during his visit to Brazil; when asked about the protests that took to the streets, he stated that "young people who don't protest don't please me"; Monday's headline highlights papal encouragement of protests; but does this also apply to the various demonstrations against Globo and its capacity for manipulation?
247 – During his visit to Brazil, Pope Francis broke protocol, went into contact with the crowds in Rio de Janeiro, criticized corruption, rejected the legalization of marijuana, and called on young people to take to the streets to express themselves. The politicized tone of his speech was exploited in his last moment on Brazilian soil by Globo. When questioned by reporter Gerson Camarotti of GloboNews about the June protests that took over the streets of Brazil, the Pope encouraged demonstrations but warned against manipulation:
"Frankly, I tell you: I don't really know why young people are protesting. That's the first point. Second point: I don't like young people who don't protest. Because young people have the illusion of utopia, and utopia isn't always bad. Utopia is about breathing and looking ahead. Young people are more spontaneous, they don't have as much life experience, it's true. But sometimes experience holds us back. And they have more energy to defend their ideas. Young people are essentially nonconformists. And that's beautiful! We need to listen to young people, give them spaces to express themselves, and ensure they aren't manipulated."
Does this also apply to the various protests against Globo and its capacity for manipulation?
During the June protests, the broadcaster was targeted by the "Occupy Globo Network" march, an event confirmed by more than 2 million internet users on Facebook. Around the same time, a case of tax evasion by the company was revealed, in a process that was under seal until it was leaked to journalist Miguel do Rosário, editor of the blog O Cafezinho. "The debt is the sum of taxes plus interest and fines, resulting from an infraction notice in which the tax authorities detected Globo's intention to defraud the taxman. In updated values, it would reach close to R$ 1 billion."
