"Compared to Dilma, I was treated well by the media."
Upon launching a website in Brasília about social changes that have occurred in the last twelve years, former President Lula mocked the national press coverage of the Workers' Party governments and said that his treatment is even superior to that given to President Dilma; "I was worried here, Dilma, because I heard a child crying and I was afraid that some sector of the press would say it was a protest at the launch of the website," he stated; under the coordination of Franklin Martins, the website is divided into four broad themes: Social Advances, Economy, Democracy and Brazil in the World.
From the Rede Brasil Atual – President Dilma Rousseff and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated this afternoon (12) in the launch of the website O Brasil da Mudança, which brings together data and testimonials about the achievements of the 12 years of "democratic and popular" governments with the PT at the helm. The initiative is part of one of the main guidelines of Dilma's reelection campaign for the internet: to combat disinformation and rumors against her candidacy on social networks and to reaffirm the achievements reached during the president's administration.
"Today, I think they treated me well, compared to the treatment they give the president," Lula stated, criticizing the lack of impartiality in the traditional Brazilian press when dealing with the PT (Workers' Party). Ironically, Lula began his speech by summarizing how the press handles issues that have negative repercussions for the PT: "I was worried here, Dilma, because I heard a child crying and I was afraid that some sector of the press would say it was a protest at the launch of the website."
"Someone needs to say: more things are happening than people expected and know. Today, I can say without fear of being wrong that there is no example, in any country, of the number of successful social policies as many as those we have implemented in this country," the former president added.
For Lula, the reason for the preferential treatment is the attention that the PT governments gave to combating poverty and generating employment and income. "When we created Bolsa Família, people were already asking: 'And the exit strategy, what about the exit strategy?' People hadn't even started yet and that already bothered them. In other words, putting the poor in the budget is one of the most revolutionary tasks anyone can do in government. If a general or a minister goes a month without receiving a salary, nothing happens. But if a child goes three days without a glass of milk, a little soup, they can die of hunger," he reflected.
Dilma, who spoke briefly due to a throat inflammation, reaffirmed the points made by Lula. "We are discussing here a political debate that uses truth as a privileged instrument. Our politics are based on ideals, on a program to improve people's lives. President Lula was masterful: putting the poor in the budget is the essence of our party program. Placing the poor at the center of Brazil's transformation is the focus of this government, which wants to continue the transformation of this country," she stated.
Under the coordination of Franklin Martins, the website is divided into four broad themes: Social Advances, Economy, Democracy, and Brazil in the World. Martins, former Minister of Social Communication, also heads the news website Muda Mais, which plays the role of disseminating news about the government and Dilma's campaign, as well as refuting rumors on the internet.
The content on Bolsa Família; the Luz para Todos program; public policies for health and education; data on Minha Casa, Minha Vida; family farming; agrarian reform; agribusiness; micro and macroeconomics; employment and wage policies; the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) and the regulation of the pre-salt oil reserves is already available online. The Democracy and Brazil in the World sessions will go live next week.
"If these achievements exist, it's not just because the governments did them. It's because the people chose these governments and demanded their rights from them. The website reveals the Brazil built by these people," stated Martins, who presented the content related to the Bolsa Família program. "Here it becomes clear, for example, how Bolsa Família empowers women, how it encourages work, how it stimulates the economy."
