Bolsonaro hijacked a national holiday that should have been civic, says sociologist.

"It's a hijacking of Independence," says sociologist André Botelho.

247 - In interview with FSPSociologist André Botelho states that it is very serious that the anniversary is not being used by the government for reflection on Brazil. And even more serious is its bias in favor of a particular group, for electoral purposes, as Jair Bolsonaro does.

Sociologist André Botelho is one of the authors of the manifesto "This September 7th, be independent," an initiative whose objective is to recover the civic character of the celebrations for the Bicentennial of Brazil's Independence.

Organized by the Social Sciences Network (a movement that brings together four social science associations) and supported by various academic entities, the document argues that September 7th should be a landmark in the fight against threats to democracy.

"It's a hijacking of Independence," he says, "[of] a moment that should be a great civic celebration involving debate between different segments of society."
