World Opera - After his extradition to Sweden was ultimately ordered by the British courts, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange escaped house arrest and took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the United Kingdom. He is now seeking political asylum from the government of Rafael Correa.

The information comes from Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patiño, who reported this Tuesday (June 19th) that the journalist has requested political asylum in the country. According to the diplomat, the request is already being evaluated.

Patiño told the press that Assange sent a letter to the president of the Andean country, Rafael Correa, in which he claims that he is being subjected to political "persecution."

The British Supreme Court announced last Thursday (June 14th) that Assange's appeal after being sentenced to extradition to Sweden was denied. From now on, there are no further possibilities of reversing the journalist's sentence within the UK justice system.
