Brazilian Press Association (ABI), organizations, and hundreds of journalists are asking the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to suspend charges against journalist Marcelo Auler.

The decision by the 5th Civil Court of the Court of Justice of Paraná, which censored and blocked the journalist's accounts, contradicts the jurisprudence of the Supreme Federal Court, according to the Brazilian Press Association (ABI).

247 - The Brazilian Press Association (ABI) filed this Wednesday (26), at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), a petition addressed to the president of the Court, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso. The document, signed by 29 representative entities of journalists and civil society, in addition to 550 journalists, jurists, politicians and personalities, requests the suspension of the collection and legal actions against the journalist Marcelo Auler, of Brazil 247

The petition states that the decision of the 5th Civil Court of the Court of Justice of Paraná, which stipulates compensation totaling R$ 76 against the journalist, contradicts the jurisprudence of the Supreme Federal Court.

In this regard, the request cites that the Supreme Court plenary, by majority vote, has already decided "to establish that the civil liability of a journalist, in the case of disseminating news involving a public figure or a matter of social interest, depends on the journalist having acted with intent or gross negligence, ruling out the possibility of liability in the event of mere value judgments, opinions or criticisms, or the dissemination of truthful information on matters of public interest."

In addition to freezing bank accounts and zeroing out all balances, leaving the journalist without resources, the decisions of the Paraná judiciary decreed the censorship of the published reports.

ABI also requested a meeting with Minister Barroso to personally deliver the document to him.
