The world's second-largest fishing vessel dumps tons of dead fish on the coast of France.
An NGO working to preserve marine life accuses the vessel of illegally dumping fish that would not be usable.
247 - The FV Margiris, the second largest fishing vessel in the world, dumped around 10 tons of dead fish into the sea in La Rochelle, France, in the early hours of Thursday (3), reports the newspaper The globe.
Photos of the 'accident' gained widespread attention after the NGO Sea Shepherd publicized the case online. The organization, which works to preserve marine life, accuses the vessel of illegally dumping fish that would not be usable.
The large quantity of fish formed a "floating carpet" that shocked French authorities, who are investigating the case.
According to the Pelagic Freezer-Trawler Association, the company that represents the vessel, the incident was accidental, resulting from a rupture in the ship's net.
