'The environment is a strategic agenda for Brazil,' says Marina Silva at COP27.

Marina, who is being considered for the position of Minister of the Environment in Lula's new government, declined to comment: "The last thing an ally should do is create embarrassment for the president."

247 - Former minister and elected federal deputy Marina Silva (Rede-SP) stated to CNN Brazil that the Environment is a "strategic agenda for Brazil and the world in which Brazil has already shown that it knows what to do, how to do it, and has shown results."

She is in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, participating in COP27 (United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022) and will accompany the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who is expected to arrive at the event on Monday (14).

Marina is being considered to return to head Lula's Ministry of the Environment. When questioned, she dodged the question: "The last thing an ally should do is create embarrassment for the president," so that he "feels comfortable choosing his team according to what he deems most appropriate for the objectives he has set in the different agendas, such as development, economy, health, education, and the environment," she added.

Speaking again about COP27, the former minister highlighted the need for Brazil to regain its role as an international leader in environmental preservation. “One of the steps [towards advancing the preservation agenda] is Brazil's return to the COP arena as a protagonist. Under the [Jair] Bolsonaro government, they always condition controlling deforestation on being paid to do so. And Brazil will say, yes, it wants international cooperation, but preserving the Amazon and Brazilian biomes is in our interest.”

In addition to Marina, Lula will be accompanied at COP27 by the future first lady, Rosangela Lula da Silva, Senator Simone Tebet (MDB-MS), and former ministers Izabella Teixeira, Celso Amorim, Aloizio Mercadante (PT), and Fernando Haddad (PT).
