247 - Indigenous leader Junior Hekurari, president of the Yanomami Indigenous Health District Council, said that the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government denied more than 60 requests for help made by Yanomami Indians in Roraima (RR). The interview was given to Estúdio I, on GloboNews.
The children's hospital in Roraima registered 29 Yanomami admissions in one week. The total number reaches 47. According to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, headed by Sônia Guajajara, 99 Yanomami children died in 2022 due to illegal mining in the region. The ministry estimates that at least 570 children have died from mercury contamination, malnutrition, and hunger in recent years.

"The people suffered for four years," said Junior Hekurari. "The current government has acknowledged this tragedy that has lasted four years. Many people, many children, died from malaria and malnutrition. I denounced this, I asked the Ministry of Health for support for intervention actions in indigenous health in Roraima. We received no response from the government," he continued.
"We asked him to visit Yanomami territory to see the reality. He simply ignored the leaders. He went to visit a mining area and spoke with miners. We were upset about this and reported it. The Bolsonaro government never helped the Yanomami and encouraged illegal mining on our land. We were dying while he went to Boa Vista to talk to miners."
