Deforestation in the Amazon in the first two months of the year reached its lowest rate in the last six years.

The Legal Amazon comprises 59% of Brazilian territory and encompasses the area of ​​9 states.

247 - The Legal Amazon had the lowest deforestation rate in six years in the first two months of 2024, according to data from the Institute of Man and Environment of the Amazon (Imazon) released this Monday (18) and reproduced in a report by G1.

Last year, during this same period (January and February), 523 km² of forest were felled in the biome, an area equivalent to the size of Brasília. In 2024, 196 km² were felled. Therefore, it is possible to say that deforestation in the biome had the lowest rate in the last six years and a decrease of 63% when compared to the same period last year.

The Legal Amazon corresponds to 59% of the Brazilian territory and encompasses the area of ​​9 states (Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins and part of Maranhão).
