China responds to Japanese Prime Minister's speech on security and defense.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticizes changes in Japanese military policy and questions commitment to pacifism.
247 - The Chinese government reacted this Friday (24) to statements made by Japan's new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi. The response came through Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who commented on the Japanese leader's references to the Asian giant.
According to the Global TimesGuo Jiakun emphasized that China maintains the best peace and security record among the world's major powers. "I already answered similar questions yesterday. I would like to reiterate that, when it comes to peace and security, China has the best record among major countries," the spokesperson stated.
In his speech, Guo also criticized recent changes in Japanese defense policy, pointing out that the country has been moving away from its pacifist stance.
“Japan has significantly adjusted its security policy, continuously increased its defense budget year after year, loosened restrictions on arms exports, and is seeking to develop disruptive military capabilities,” he stated. “This cannot fail to raise serious doubts among Asian neighbors and the international community as to whether Japan is truly committed to a ‘purely defensive policy’ and to peaceful development.”
