China demands an immediate ceasefire and progress towards a two-state solution at the UN.
Chinese envoy Geng Shuang warns of humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and calls on Israel to respect international law.
247 - In a statement to the UN Security Council on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, China's Deputy Permanent Representative, Geng Shuang, made a strong appeal for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, as well as the implementation of a two-state solution with the creation of an independent Palestinian state. The statements were... published by Global Times this Wednesday (6).
According to Geng, the conflict in Gaza has been ongoing for almost two years, leaving unprecedented destruction and unimaginable suffering for civilians on both sides. He recalled that the ceasefire agreement signed in January had offered a prospect of truce and the release of all hostages, but the pause was broken and the violence persists.
"The brutal reality shows that military means cannot resolve the conflict — only a ceasefire can save lives and bring the hostages home," Geng declared.
The diplomat expressed deep concern about recent news regarding Israel's plans to escalate its offensive and fully occupy Gaza, urging the country to immediately halt such dangerous actions. He also called on all parties to agree to a binding and sustainable ceasefire and appealed to influential nations to act responsibly to end hostilities.
The humanitarian dimension of the crisis was also highlighted by the Chinese envoy, who recalled that more than 60 civilians have already died in Gaza and that two million people remain under extreme blockade, with an imminent risk of famine.
"Two million innocent civilians in Gaza should not be victims of war, nor should they continue to suffer from man-made disasters," Geng stated.
He demanded that Israel comply with international law, especially humanitarian law, restore the flow of aid, and support relief efforts by the UN and humanitarian organizations.
In closing his speech, Geng reinforced the urgent need to move towards a two-state solution, stressing that only the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state can prevent further tragedies like the current one. He recalled that the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly last week sent a clear message of support for this solution, and that the international community must oppose unilateral actions that undermine this objective.
China, Geng assured, will continue working with other countries to end the fighting, reduce the humanitarian crisis, and promote a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution, allowing Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace and prosperity.
