Racism in Brazil is so deeply ingrained that there are those who simply cannot watch a Black person win a beauty pageant. There are people who cannot bear the idea of a Black woman at the top of a competition based on appearances.
It's not like cases where the final showdown is between two white women. It's not simply a disagreement among the judges, which would be expected for a program that aims to foster exactly this type of discussion.
What happens is of a different nature. When it comes to a Black woman, what should be an assessment instantly reveals itself to be an extrapolation of a historically ingrained, vulgar, and ignorant racism. Whiteness simply does not forgive.
But thankfully, the beauty of Monalysa Alcântara, the new Miss Brazil [hopefully, Miss Universe soon!], is so great that it overshadows the hateful people who, in recent days, have filled the comment sections of social media with filth.
