Wesley gets injured and will only return in 2013.
The midfielder, who had been campaigning to return to Brazil, tore a ligament in his right knee in the match against Guarani this Sunday, after only four games for Palmeiras.
247 - Palmeiras lost its biggest investment of the season in last Sunday's (8) match. Midfielder Wesley had barely arrived at the Palestra Itália team when he was already injured. In his fourth game, against Guarani, the midfielder twisted his knee and tests carried out on Monday afternoon confirmed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The recovery time is six to eight months, meaning the player is only expected to return to the pitch in 2013.
On Monday afternoon, the player underwent an MRI scan, which revealed the severity of the injury. Wesley is scheduled to undergo surgery next week.
Wesley only played four games for Palmeiras, and was considered one of the most important signings of the season – so much so that, since his arrival, the midfielder has become a vital piece in Luiz Felipe Scolari's tactical scheme, who had been fielding him as a starter for the team.
The signing of the midfielder required a great effort from the São Paulo team. After attempting a fundraising campaign among fans, the Verdão board managed to find an investor to pay the R$ 21 million demanded by Werder Bremen, from Germany, to finalize the signing. The midfielder was presented two weeks ago as the missing piece for the midfield.
Following the diagnosis, Palmeiras players expressed their support for their teammate on Twitter. "Wesley, stay strong, my boss. You'll be back with us soon," wrote midfielder Daniel Carvalho.
