Violence rises in Bahia and falls in Pernambuco.

The most violent city in Brazil is Simões Filho, neighboring the capital Salvador; pre-candidate for governor, PMDB member Geddel Vieira Lima, lamented the violence statistics and highlighted the reduction in the neighboring state; there's a joke in Pernambuco that says Eduardo Campos (PSB) is the best governor in the state's history and that Jaques Wagner (PT), governor of Bahia, is the second best; but from Pernambuco; understand the joke.

Violence rises in Bahia and falls in Pernambuco.

Bahia 247

There's a (bad taste?) joke in Pernambuco that says Eduardo Campos (PSB) is the best governor in the state's history, and that Jaques Wagner (PT), governor of Bahia, is the second best. But in Pernambuco.

The basis of the joke is that because Bahia is losing its label as a 'powerhouse of the Northeast,' especially compared to its neighboring state, it is fueling the rise of Eduardo Campos. In this sense, Campos is the best governor and Wagner the second best in Pernambuco, for 'helping' him with Bahia's regression.

Joking aside, yet another sad piece of news for the 'northeastern powerhouse'. The 2013 Violence Map, released this Wednesday (6) by the Sangari Institute/Ministry of Justice, points to four municipalities in Bahia among the ten with the highest homicide rates in Brazil up to 2010.

Geddel Vieira Lima, the PMDB's pre-candidate to succeed Wagner and vice-president of Corporate Banking at Caixa Econômica Federal, lamented the figures earlier on his Twitter profile and highlighted that there had been a decrease in violence in Pernambuco.

Given the successive expressions of appreciation and praise, speculation is growing that Geddel could support Eduardo Campos in a possible presidential candidacy in 2014.

With a rate of 141,5 murders per 100 inhabitants, Simões Filho ranks first among municipalities with more than 20 inhabitants. Lauro de Freitas appears in third place, with 106,6 deaths; Porto Seguro is in sixth position, with 91,4; and Eunápolis in eighth place, with 87,4 homicides, as highlighted in an article in the newspaper A Tarde.

When comparing states, Bahia appears in fourth position, with 34,4 murders per 100 inhabitants, behind only Pará (34,6), Espírito Santo (39,4) and Alagoas (55,3).

In 2012, Bahia appeared in the survey with the highest rate (37,7 homicides), but occupied seventh place, which this year represents an improvement in the index in the states of Paraíba, Amapá and Pernambuco, which appeared ahead.

Bahia also ranks fourth among states with the highest growth rates in firearm deaths between 2000 and 2010: 195%. Among capital cities, Salvador also ranks fourth, with 59,6 firearm deaths per 100 inhabitants.
