247 - Former basketball player Igor Eduardo Cabral, 29, arrested for brutally assaulting his ex-girlfriend inside an elevator in Natal (RN), claims to have been assaulted inside the Dinorá Simas Public Jail in Ceará-Mirim, where he has been detained since August 1st. Images circulating on social media show injuries to his back, head, and neck. The case is being investigated by the Civil Police and the Prison System's Internal Affairs Department. Igor was indicted for attempted femicide after being caught on security cameras punching his ex-partner, Juliana, 61 times in just 36 seconds, between the 16th floor and the ground floor of the building where she lived, in the Ponta Negra neighborhood of Natal. He was arrested two days after the crime, which occurred on July 26. According to Igor's defense, the former athlete was taken to an isolated cell, where he was allegedly stripped, handcuffed, and assaulted with "punches, kicks, elbow strikes, and pepper spray." They further allege that those responsible for the violence were prison guards at the facility.
Images of the injuries are being examined to verify the veracity of the assaults. After the alleged beating, Igor was taken to the Civil Police Station, where he filed a police report, and then underwent a forensic medical examination at the Technical-Scientific Institute of Expertise (ITEP). The Penitentiary Administration Secretariat confirmed that the case is under investigation. The former player's defense had requested an individual cell for security reasons, but the request was denied due to a lack of infrastructure at the prison unit.
Brutal crime and recidivism
The victim, Juliana, needed to be hospitalized after the attack. She suffered multiple fractures to her facial bones and underwent reconstructive surgery at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. She was discharged from the hospital last Monday (August 4th). Security footage shows that, before the beating in the elevator, the couple argued in the condominium's recreation area. The fight began after Juliana sent a message to a friend of the aggressor, which enraged him. Igor took the victim's cell phone and threw it into the building's swimming pool.
In an interview, Juliana reported that episodes of aggression and destruction of her personal belongings had already occurred. "He had already broken one of my cell phones by stepping on it. The second time, he threw another one against the wall," she said. The case continues to be monitored by the authorities, both in relation to the crime against his ex-partner and the allegations of torture inside the prison. Igor remains in pre-trial detention.
