The state scored 350 points, while the national average was 377. Tocantins was ahead of Bahia (343), Maranhão (343) and Alagoas (339). The state with the highest score was Paraná, with an average of 406.

Another negative statistic for the state was the percentage of students proficient in the subject. According to the study, 55% of students are below level 1 in mathematics. This level refers to students capable of answering clear questions, identifying information, and performing routine procedures. Nationally, 44% of students are below this level.

Compared to other states, Tocantins ranked better than Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe, Bahia, Maranhão, and Alagoas, where the percentage of students below level 1 ranged from 55% to 64%. The best-ranked states were Paraná and Espírito Santo, both with 31% of students below that level.

Reading and Science

The study indicated that only 9% of students are below level 1B in reading proficiency, and 32% reached level 1A. At level 1A, students recognize the main subject and purpose of the text or are able to relate the text to everyday knowledge. Only Pará reached level 6 in reading proficiency, the highest level in the assessment; however, only 1% of students achieved this level.

In reading, Tocantins achieved only 376 points – the national average was 407. In science, the average for Tocantins was 372 and the national average was 401 points. According to the ranking, Tocantins is one of the six worst states in the country in reading and one of the ten worst in science.

In terms of science proficiency percentages, the state had 5% of its students classified below level 1. Nationally, the rate was 4%. Tocantins showed a percentage of 39% of students who managed to reach level 1A in this subject.
