The São Paulo Court of Justice orders a halt to bike lane construction, with the exception of Avenida Paulista.

Following a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office, Judge Luiz Fernando Guerra ordered the suspension of construction on all bike lanes, cycle paths, and cycle routes in São Paulo, a key initiative of Mayor Fernando Haddad (PT), with the exception of Avenida Paulista. If the decision is disobeyed, the City Hall may face a daily fine of R$ 10. Earlier, Haddad stated in an interview that a project should not be judged before its completion.

SP 247 – The São Paulo Court of Justice ruled this Thursday afternoon, the 9th, that construction on all bike lanes, cycle paths, and cycle routes in São Paulo, with the exception of Avenida Paulista, should be halted. The decision was made by Judge Luiz Fernando Guerra and responds to a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The judge considers it "reasonable," based on the size of the cycle path network proposed by Haddad, "that a prior study of global and local traffic impact be carried out." However, he disagreed with the Public Prosecutor's argument that the City Hall violated the Bidding Law, since it does not involve engineering works.

If the City Hall fails to comply with the decision, it may have to pay a daily fine of R$ 10. Earlier, in an interview with Rádio Capital, the mayor criticized the Public Prosecutor's action, stating that one could not judge a work that had not yet been completed. "There's no point in judging a work that isn't finished. How can someone judge a plan that is under construction?", he asked.read more).
