Brazilian Thiago Pereira once again beat Ryan Lochte at the Santa Clara Swimming Grand Prix in the United States. On Sunday night, he won the 200-meter medley with a time of 1:57.63. This was 1 second faster than the American, who holds the world record in the event, but finished second with a time of 1:58.99. Conor Dwyer won the bronze medal with a time of 2:01.08.
This was Thiago Pereira's second gold medal at the Santa Clara Grand Prix. On Saturday, the Brazilian triumphed in the 400-meter medley, also beating Lochte. In the other final he competed in, on Friday, he finished only fifth in the 200-meter breaststroke.
PHELPS - American Michael Phelps ended his participation in the Santa Clara Grand Prix with a rare defeat in one of his specialties. On Sunday night, the owner of 14 Olympic gold medals finished second in the 200-meter butterfly, in which he holds the world record.
Phelps recorded a time of 1:55.40, just one hundredth of a second slower than Australian Nicholas Darcy. Thus, the star left the competition in California with two gold medals, from the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter backstroke, and two silver medals, in the 100-meter freestyle and the 200-meter butterfly.
OTHER RESULTS - American Kathleen Hersey won the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:06.89, beating Australian Stephanie Rice, who finished second with 2:07.54. Eric Shanteau triumphed in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:01.54. The women's version was won by Jessica Hardy.
Emily Seebohm and Daniel Bell won the women's and men's 100-meter backstroke events, respectively. Lochte finished second in this event. Ariana Kukors took gold in the 200-meter medley, Wendy Trott won the 800-meter freestyle, and Ricardo Monasterio triumphed in the 1.500-meter freestyle.
