247 - The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) is investigating the purchase, during the administration of former minister Nelson Teich, of R$ 80 million worth of aprons, budgeted at R$ 912 million. In an audit, the Court's technicians found that the deal was closed without the ministry providing "information on the sizing of the quantity of this purchase, in terms of professionals and locations to receive the products," says the TCU.

The risk is that the government has engaged in "oversized and uneconomical contracting." The court also points to "risks related to the logistics of acquiring and distributing the products, which could result in untimely delivery of products to the target population, compromising the effectiveness of the intended acquisition." The unit price - R$ 11,40 - of the aprons is also under scrutiny. The TCU (Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts) stated that there is no study on the appropriate value of the materials, "which could result in damage to public funds".

Teich resigned last week after disagreements with Jair Bolsonaro, who advocates the use of chloroquine in the fight against the coronavirus, unlike the former minister.
