Brasilia - The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Tarso Genro, announced this Thursday afternoon (27) that he will send to the State Legislative Assembly a project creating the student free pass in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, which covers 33 municipalities. Students who reside in one municipality and study in another should benefit, especially those in secondary and university education.

According to the government, the project will be submitted urgently by next week and should also address the urban agglomerations of the northern coast; the southern coast (Pelotas/Rio Grande axis) and the northeastern coast (Caxias/Bento Gonçalves axis). The expectation is that the project will be approved by the beginning of August.

The impact of the measure on the state budget is estimated at between R$ 8 and 10 million per year, which means 200 free passes per month. The government also informed that it will request the State Agency for the Regulation of Delegated Public Services of RS (Agergs) to return and archive the 5,88% readjustment process, which was supposed to be applied on July 1st.
