Responding to a request from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), the Supreme Federal Court (STF) opened an inquiry to investigate allegations made against federal deputy João Carlos Bacelar (PR-BA). The case's rapporteur, Minister Celso Mello, determined, on August 23rd, a 90-day deadline for conducting investigations to ascertain the crimes of smuggling and embezzlement.

According to an article in Veja magazine, the congressman allegedly directed part of his parliamentary amendments to the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valley Development Company (Codevasf) with the aim of securing agreements with municipalities in the interior of Bahia in order to guarantee the hiring of his company, Empresa Brasileira de Terraplanagem e Construções Ltda (Embratec).

The Comptroller General of the Union (CGU) determined that there was overpricing in four cases, two in Barro Alto, one in Canarana, and another in São Gabriel. According to the Bahia Notícias website, the Supreme Court Justice also ordered that official letters be sent to the aforementioned municipal governments requesting copies of the bidding procedures.
