"It would even be irresponsible to implement rationing."

Governor Geraldo Alckmin sees no need for water rationing, despite the critical situation of the reservoirs, especially the Cantareira system; "The population has adhered to and helped a lot through the rational use of water. 90% of the population has reduced water consumption. It would be an irresponsible attitude to ration, as we could lose all the savings achieved. And this could even have physical losses, because when a system is closed and then reopened there is a large change in pressure."

SP 247 - The precarious conditions of the water reservoirs in the State of São Paulo, especially the Cantareira system, are not enough for Governor Geraldo Alckmin to see the need for rationing in the supply. He said this Saturday (2) that he does not intend to "change any strategy" regarding the supply.

"The population has been very supportive and helpful through the rational use of water. 90% of the population has reduced their water consumption. It would be irresponsible to ration water, as we could lose all the savings achieved. And this could even lead to physical losses, because when a system is shut down and then reopened, there is a large change in pressure," said the politician, referring to the Cantareira system.

Alckmin reiterated that the water supply is guaranteed until the beginning of 2015. "The decision is technical and we are prepared to last until the rainy season." The governor, who is running for re-election, participated in an event with the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, in the capital of São Paulo.

A report released this week by Sabesp revealed that 74% of consumers in Greater São Paulo have reduced their consumption compared to the target.

Since February 1st, the company has been offering a 30% discount bonus on water bills for those who reduce their consumption by 20%. In readings taken between July 1st and 25th, 46% of consumers reduced their consumption within the target range.

According to a study by Sabesp, this results in a saving of 2.400 liters per second in water production during these first four weeks of July.
