E-commerce grows 24% in the first half of the year

São Paulo – Brazilian e-commerce revenue reached R$ 12,7 billion in the first half of 2013, 24% more than the same period of the previous year. The survey, released on the 21st, is from E-bit, a company specializing in information from the sector.
According to the report, from January 1st to June 30th, 35,54 million purchase orders were made via the internet, a 20% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. The average value of online purchases was R$ 359,49, 4% higher compared to 2012.
The fashion and accessories category was the most sought after for online purchases (13,7%). Home appliances came in second place (12,3%), followed by cosmetics, perfumes, personal care, health (12,2%), computers (9%), and books and magazines (8,9%).
According to the research, the results contrast with a time of lower consumption expectations. "They [consumers] tend to be more careful and demanding at these times. Therefore, they are attracted by the advantages of the sector, such as lower prices, ease of use, and more flexible payment terms," said Pedro Guasti, CEO of E-bit.
According to the research, the projected revenue is approximately R$ 28 billion, a nominal growth of 25% compared to last year.
The survey shows that in the first half of the year, 3,98 million people made their first online purchase, a number 14,2% lower than that recorded in the same period of 2012 (4,64 million). According to the survey, the majority of this audience is female (55%), in the 25 to 49 age range (67%). Regarding education, people with primary and secondary education are the majority (46%). As for income, the most relevant range is that of people earning up to R$ 3 (58,62%).
