Ceará 247 -  The City Hall of Fortaleza inspected eight establishments on Praia do Futuro this Monday morning (18), issued citations to six of them and applied eight fines for non-compliance with the new Waste Law. Of the fines, six were for non-compliance with requirements or for not having a Solid Waste Management Plan (PGRS) and two for improper disposal of solid waste to the public collection service. The fines applied total R$ 15.125,00.

After a week of educational activities, the City Hall today began effective enforcement of the law holding large generators of solid waste in the city responsible. Starting this Monday, the activity will penalize large waste producers who do not comply with the new rules, as reported by the superintendent of Agefis, Marcelo Pinheiro. "Last week, we had an educational campaign where we sensitized the large generators of solid waste, who are responsible for all handling, transportation, and final disposal of the waste. Today, we begin, with the rigor of the law, to punish offenders who disrespect the law," he stated.

For Rodrigo Oliveira, owner of one of the city's beach bars, the action comes at a good time. "This is a very important initiative because there are several bars and establishments that do not respect and pollute the city. For those of us who work in tourism, it is essential to have the law regulated, as it makes the city cleaner. We were already concerned about our waste, doing everything correctly. We support and raise awareness among neighbors and other bars. It's a gain for the city," he said.

The fines are directed at large producers of solid waste who violate the law by producing 100 liters per day or more. Construction companies will be fined starting at 50 liters per day, and producers of hazardous waste will be taxed for any quantity.

Penalties
Infractions are divided into minor, moderate, serious, and very serious categories, with fines ranging from R$ 687,50 to R$ 3.473,50. Repeat offenses may result in a three to five times increase in the initial penalty. In addition to fines, companies that violate the "Waste Law" may face license suspension, revocation, or even closure, depending on the severity of the infraction.
