Fulfilling an agenda in Brasília-DF, the Undersecretary of Justice of Piauí, Carlos Edilson Sousa, met, this Monday (16), with the Director-General of the National Penitentiary Department (Depen), Marco Antônio Severo, to discuss the modernization plan for the state's prison system.

At the meeting, it was announced that Piauí will benefit from seven new vehicles for the Department of Justice, through a partnership with the Federal Government. Also discussed on the agenda was the release of the second installment of funds for the construction of the Altos Public Prison and the National Penitentiary Fund.

The state of Piauí received R$ 44,7 million from the Fund for the construction and renovation of prison units, as well as for investment in information technology, equipment, and security materials. Two new penitentiaries, one in Altos and the other in Campo Maior, are under construction, and others are planned for Oeiras and Parnaíba.

“These are fundamental investments that will help, in the short, medium and long term, with a strong state policy and through joint work between institutions, to direct solutions to the problems affecting the prison system, guaranteeing greater security for the citizen,” points out Carlos Edilson Sousa.

The Undersecretary of Justice of Piauí also participated in a meeting in Brasília between the Minister of Justice and Citizenship, Alexandre de Moraes, and Secretaries of Security, Justice, and Penitentiary Administration from across the country. The meeting aimed to present the points for the implementation of the National Security Plan.

“This plan aims to address the national prison crisis by fostering support for state secretaries, strengthening intelligence centers in the federative units, enabling the opening of new spaces in the prison system, transferring immediate resources to the states, among other measures,” explains Carlos Edilson.
