São Paulo experiences its coldest night in 12 years.
The city of São Paulo recorded 0ºC at 3:30 am this Monday (13), at the Capela do Socorro meteorological station, south zone. This was the lowest temperature in 12 years, measured by the Emergency Management Center (CGE); the forecast is that thermometers will register between 6ºC and 8ºC in the next early morning; since Friday (10), at least two homeless men have been found dead with suspected hypothermia.

At other stations, thermometers also approached zero. In São Mateus, in the eastern zone, the temperature reached 0,4ºC at 4:10 am. Parelheiros, in the far south, recorded 0,8ºC around 1:30 am.
According to CGE meteorologist Thomas Garcia, the cold should gradually decrease from Wednesday (15). The forecast is that thermometers will register between 6ºC and 8ºC in the next early morning.
Two deaths
Yesterday (12), at 17 pm, the municipality entered a state of alert for low temperatures – an action taken whenever the capital registers less than 10ºC. Thomas explains that the alert continued at 9:30 am today. In these situations, a preventive plan from the municipality's Social Assistance is activated, with reinforcement in the reception of homeless people.
Since Friday (10), at least two homeless men have been found dead with suspected hypothermia. João Carlos Rodrigues, 55, was found by a metro employee in front of Belém Station. The body of Adilson Roberto Justino, age unknown, was on Avenida Paulista, near the intersection with Brigadeiro Luis Antônio.
According to the city hall, Operation Low Temperatures, which began on May 16, collects an average of more than 9 people per day. The municipal administration reported that it has increased the number of spaces in the 79 shelters in the capital by 1,2. In total, the city has 10 permanent spaces.
